I got it...I got it...

Week 3...

Zachary is really settling in here. He is getting used to the family routine and is improving on his house manners. He did have 1 accident in the house this week. We continue to accommodate Zachary by letting him out every 2 - 3 hours while we are home. When we leave, he is crated. My wonderful husband works from home during the week, so that has allowed Zachary to have access to the yard frequently.

We have begun to practice NILIF (Nothing In Life Is Free), since we use this technique with our own dogs. Zachary has done well this week learning that he needs to follow the rules before getting anything. Please follow this link to learn more on this proven method: http://www.sspca.org/Dogs/TANSTAAFL.html .

Week 2...

Zachary did not have any potty accidents in the house for 1 week. He had 2 in his second week. We don't feel that he is fully house-trained, but pretty close as long as he has access to go out regularly. He is crate trained and sleeps in it at night. He doesn't care to be crated for lengthy periods during the day. He has started working on some basic commands. He is learning sit, stay, come and down. His leash walking has improved too. He does jump on people and we are working to curb that as well.

Week 1...

Zachary's stay with us started on February 9, 2008. It was funny how he ended up here. We were all loading the van with dogs from the day's Meet & Greet at Petco (in the Arboretum). Everyone was in except Zachary. I asked the director (Deborah of Forgotten Friends), where he should go, since I didn't see an empty crate for him to ride back in. She just looked at me with that, take him with you I don't have any room, grin on her face. I caved and said okay.

The first step for him coming into the household was introducing him to our pack, Ray & Rascal. They were fine and just sniffed each other. The week continued with a lot of sniffing, learning boundaries and playing. We learned that Zachary does like to chew things that he shouldn't sometimes. We have been redirecting him to the correct items in which to chew.
